Nick's Walk

Story

In May 2021 I started a 900 mile walk to cover the distance of an old pilgrim's route from central France to Santiago de Compostela. My wanderings round Yorkshire, the Peak District, the Chilterns and the Thames Path brought me to 904 miles at Tower Bridge at the end of July. I can say it has been a fantastic experience; there has never been a day I was not grateful to be walking - it is true that the weather and my boots were kind to me. I have walked alone and with friends, met generous strangers along the way explaining a little about Multiple Systems Atrophy as I went. I may well do (some?) of the planned route from Le Puy en Velay to north west Spain - but not yet. I would like to thank all of those who have supported me along way. The donations, messages and practical support have made it easier to keep putting one foot in front of another. Thank you.

Plan B

7th April 2021
The news from France means taking a serious look at an alternative start for my sabbatical walk. I am still looking at setting off in May but The Wolds Way is looking favourite. I will miss out on the Puy lentils and Duck confit washed down with a rustic red but Fish and Chips or Yorkshire Pudding with a pint of bitter will fill the gap. The gentle start across the chalky Wolds will make an easier build up before hitting the coast and the Cleveland Way. It will also give me the chance to walk with Bev the wonderful lady who taught the Kirkwoods so much about looking after someone in poor health.

The alternative start?

26th March 2021
The original plan to start in France on 10 May seems optimistic given travel rules and problems in Europe ( plus my second Covid jab is planned for 3rd Week in may) . So the plans I have made may need revising, I am now looking at kicking off by covering some of the mileage in the UK. The Cleveland Way and Wolds Way are both close at hand so watch out for updates.
